June 2008
Field trials. My favorite. The Sport of Cairns. I kinda like that. It’s our own Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes all in the same day.
We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day. The temperature was perfect. The sky was spring blue. The track was fast. Gee! I love watching them run. They are such speed demons.
Unfortunately, our entry was smaller than usual, so it was more a fun field trials. But it didn’t matter to any of us, especially the Cairns. They just wanted to enjoy the day.
Thanks to Veronica and Ken for hosting. There is plenty of room at Moe-A-Lot Acres (or is that Plantation?). There was plenty of water and plenty of shade and lots of space to spread out. You even provided entertainment—horses were a nice touch.
Jim Poor and his wife came to take good photos of Shadow for the rescue page on the website. While he was there he took loads of portraits of most, if not all, of the Cairns. Some of his work is posted on our website (click on News and then select the link in the Cairn Portraits article). The Daschund and the Papillon in the photos were honorable Cairns for the day. They had a great time, too. Jim took some wonderful photos of our dogs, many of which will find their way into wallets, on tables and hanging on walls.
Our Summer Fun continues on June 28. Lydia and Dwight Hutchinson will host a Fun Day and cookout and pool party (so remember your swimwear). Watch the website and your email for details. I don’t know exactly what’s planned, but I’m sure Ann Gates has some surprises for us. She certainly surprised the board when she declared happily—and with a very self-satisfied grin—that, of course, the Board will do the grilling. Then looked pointedly at me! Geesh! I have to do all the work! Hot and sweaty and so close to those burgers and dogs. Hmm. Burgers and dogs. Close. Maybe that’s not so bad after all.
This early heat wave is a reminder that this isn’t Scotland and our little Highland-bred dogs weren’t designed for the extreme heat and humidity of the Mid-Atlantic region. There will be plenty of shade and water at Lydia’s. No worries about that. But remember that summers out here can be sweltering. Take plenty of fresh water for your dogs and you even if you’re just playing ball in the back yard. A little foot pool for them will help keep them cool, as well. We have to worry about swarms of mosquitoes here by the water, so we have to change the outside water every day. A few precautions for this hot weather will help you and your Cairns have a summer of fun.
Speaking of fun, we have a fun match and another handling class coming up in September. So check the calendar of events on the site and mark you calendars. We had a blast at the last one.
I hope I see all of you at Lydia and Dwight’s on the 28th. I’ll be the one slaving over a hot grill, but I ain’t gonna be alone. Oh, Dwight??? Oh, Steve??? C’m’ere a sec…
